Vocabulary University Web-based puzzles for schools
Vocabulary University's Internet learning word games began its initial session, with a focus on English vocabulary acquisition. Fourth graders through high school seniors are given the opportunity to learn grade-level vocabulary through the use of visual vocabulary word puzzles.
In this initial Spring '97 session at VOCAB U., available at no charge, people of all ages (students, teachers and seniors as well) will solve Web-based, word puzzles that encourage them to learn new words with the help of Latin & Greek roots. Each new word is also used in context. For further review and mastery, the motivated can challenge themselves to additional sentences that are provided in word banks. Every session that a participant completes is a stepping stone toward earning a diploma and awards at VOCAB U.
Our broad objective at vocabulary.com is to provide a more interactive means to teach students, particularly, to creatively learn new vocabulary in a visually exciting, self-paced manner, said Janice Cook, Educational Editorial Manager. Verbal command, agility and understanding are key skills for the 21st century in all walks of life.
It is anticipated that corporate sponsors will donate computer hardware, color printers and graphic software to schools and organizations that show active participation in the VOCAB U. educational effort.
My Limited English Proficiency students are particularly excited about VOCAB U. They have a huge appetite to learn English, said a teacher at Long Beach Junior High. The fact that they can learn words at grade level and get positive feedback that builds their confidence and self-esteem is fabulous. It reinforces their desire to keep learning. Teacher Betsy Cloninger of Sacramento City College added, I've already added your site to our must visit list.
My students think your puzzles are wonderful, and they love getting the right answers back immediately and in context. THIS is what the Internet should be for. Thanks for creating such a great educational tool.
The staff at Vocabulary University attended the Computer Using Educators conference in Palm Springs on May 9th. Teachers and creators of K-12 directories were enthusiastic about the content of VOCAB U. and said they will include it in their Website's hot list. These positive recommendations and feedback are important as the University seeks additional sponsors for its ongoing educational effort.
We believe we have created an A+ Internet program for schools and home schoolers. By making it free, schools and students across the nation can have easy access to use it. Words simply come alive. Students, as well as other participants of all ages, improve their command of the language while having fun with our word puzzles, said Vocabulary's CEO, Carey Cook.
Vocabulary University's motto is Educational stimulation and fun -- that's the way it should be, where life-long learners can work on individual English language vocabulary acquisition. While the content is clearly aimed at young people from 4th grade through high school, the activities and games are obviously helpful and fun for everyone.
