New Game Store Caters To Gamers Of All Ages, Casual And Competitive
When it comes to games and puzzles, game players have only two moves: take what they can find at a large toy store, or search long and hard for the right game through mail order. Now, Portland Area gamers have a new move to help them find the right game or puzzle for any occasion.
Rainy Day Games is a new retail business specializing in games and puzzles. Gamers will find a large selection of strategy games, card games, jigsaw puzzles, and brainteaser puzzles. Many puzzles and games are also available for children. Co-owner Amy Ellis, a former teacher, says We focus on fun, educational games for children of all ages.
Rainy Day Games also has a large part of the store devoted to both casual and competitive play. Tables are always available free of charge for tabletop gaming and trading. Four networked computers are available for hourly charges for multi-player action of the hottest PC games out today. Co-owner Jeff Abramson says: Our mission is to provide a gaming center where any gamer can spend time and have fun, regardless of his or her experience or age.
One popular game today is a collectible card game called Magic the Gatheringtm from Seattle company Wizards of the Coast. With millions of cards in print, Magic has a very deep following, and players can come to the store to trade cards, play casually, or play in leagues and tournaments. I’ve been to many Magic tournaments, says Abramson, where younger players or newer players walk away and never come back to the game. Our store rules are posted in the store, and rules number one and two are very simple: Have Fun and Good Sportsmanship is Required! We have competitive tournaments with $100 prizes, but we need to strike a balance.
