Backgammon is a game of luck and skill. Two people play it with fifteen checkers each on a board consisting of twenty-four spaces or points. The checkers are moved according to rolls of the dice. Each player tries to bring his own checkers home and bear them off before his opponent does, hitting and blocking the enemy checkers along the way. The longer you play the game the more you will begin to understand strategies that can be used to your advantage. The game depends on the roll of the dice but it is also a game that you can develop skill in to best understand how to move for the best success. Matches are often played the best out of three to determine a winner. Backgammon is a very common game for tournaments.
The history of Backgammon or versions of it goes back a long way in history. Most recently it has a surge of popularity during the seventies. These boards because a part of most peoples living rooms either in the convenient fold up board style or tables specifically for this purpose with the points inlaid. Now thirty years later people still enjoy the game but not with the same vigor.
Backgammon can be played online and this seems to have brought some resurgence to the games popularity. Hundreds of people can be found playing many different games at any given moment of the day. Web pages are designed to keep statistics of these players if they should choose to enter a league. It can be a very pleasant pastime.
